Fall Season – what to wear for your photoshoot

San Diego Photographer

Now with everyone booking their Fall family sessions, let’s talk about outfits.

I am a big believer that you don’t need to spend a lot if money to look fabulous. If you are anything like me you will even get amazing finds at thrift stores (local or online). My favorite online store is Mercari and you can find gently used dresses for 1/3 of the price. And also any other clothes, shoes, accessories… Click on this link if you want to join. I also sold a LOT of my old clothes and I used that money to buy what I wanted on the website.

>>My first recommendation is to start with your dress and then pick everybody’s outfits based on this first piece.
>>I’ve been loving dresses lately, specially long dresses. My current favorite brands for dresses are Baltic Born and Jenny’s Pirate Booty and I’ve been seeing great deals on Mercari – they are actually selling really fast there because everybody wants one. Use the link above and do a search.
>>Marshalls and TJ Maxx often have dresses I love as well. Long, flowy dresses look amazing anywhere, from beaches to trails. Pastel colors and off white outfits are my favorite options right now. Solid color outfits coordinated with the rest of the family are ideal. Coordinated – not matchy matchy.
>>I don’t recommend black for the beach or trails. Small stripes, fluorescent colors and big brand prints should be avoided.
>>If your session is at the beach no shoes are needed.
>>Please pay attention to your undergarment: if your outfit is somewhat see-through, nude color is the way to go. >>Be mindful of your bra strap so it matches the top.
>>Brown shoes for men are great because they usually blend in with any kind of ground and doesn’t draw too much attention to their feet.
>>Rompers or dresses for babies look great in photos and they are comfortable. I have some great ideas for kids outfits (as well as adults) on my amazon list
>>If you want to bring a hat to the shoot (I personally love hats), choose a wide brim, non-flimsy hat (I have options on the amazon link above). I suggest we do some photos with and some without.
>>If you chose a trail, remember to bring comfortable to shoes for the walk and then wear your pick when we get to the shooting spot.
>>If you don’t have time to get a manicure, please trim your nails and remove the old polish.
>>Another super inexpensive option is to send me a photo of you wearing your top 3 outfits. Things that you already own and feel the most flattered and comfortable wearing. We can have a big winner right there: it is already something you own, love and feel good in. I promise: no one will know if it old, I will be able to determine if it is good for photos or not.
>>If your outfit is prone to wrinkles, consider wearing something else on the car ride and just changing after you park. That goes specially for kids: besides the winkles, kids are known for getting their clothes dirty in a matter of seconds, specially in the car.
>>If you are booking a regular session you might even have enough time to do two outfits, at least for the kids and that will make your gallery even more interesting.

What other questions do you have? And as always, if you are my client feel free to send me photos of your picks.
